South African Wine Seeks Government Aid

A leading South African wine executive has called on the country’s government for support if the industry is to prosper home and abroad.

According to a report by Business Day, Dr Johan van Rooyen, CEO of the South African Wine & Brandy Company, this week told a ministerial committee on agriculture that government support will be needed on policy development, strategic positioning and in operations.

The report said Van Rooyen’s requests included the continuation of statutory levies, the ring-fencing of allocations of wine to grape growers, and the promotion of Brand South Africa.

He also asked for the introduction of realistic taxes and excise duties.

Global oversupply and subsidies in other countries as well as stagnant domestic consumption meant the local wine industry was economically more fragile than 10 years ago, he added.
