Bardstown, Kentucky a New Stop on the Bourbon Trail

Bourbon_Trail-w.jpgA trip down the Kentucky Bourbon Trail is about to get a little longer.

The owners of Bardstown's Tom Moore Distillery believe there will be plenty of interest in their mash cookers, warehouses and fermentation tanks, though their tour will be stripped down compared to others.

"We've always been proud of our location and connection to the real heart and soul of bourbon," Chris Gretchko, brand director for whiskeys at Constellation Spirits, told The Courier-Journal. "This is for people who really want to touch it, feel it, smell it, see it."

There will be no gift shop, tasting room, or bottles of liquor for sale during tours of the Moore Distillery, but a visitor center is expected to be opened in 2010. Tours of the distillery are scheduled to begin Oct. 1.

Kentucky Distillers' Association president Eric Gregory said in a recent statement that he was thrilled about the addition to the trail. The company is the third-largest holder of distilled spirits in Kentucky out of nine members in the trade group, he said, with 11 percent of the state's nearly 5 million aging barrels.

Tens of thousands of tourists visit the trail annually, though it hasn't expanded since 1999 when it was launched with seven founding members. The Maker's Mark distillery alone draws about 70,000 people to Loretto each year.

The Moore Distillery, located on the west side of Bardstown, is used to make the premium 1792 Ridgemont Reserve, named for the year Kentucky became a state. Other labels include cheaper bourbons such as Ten High, Kentucky Tavern and Very Old Barton.
