MAY EVENTS AT SYNAGOGUE IN NAPA

The public is invited to special events at Congregation Beth Sholom on May 1, 2, 8 and 16.

CongrBethSholom-w.gifHolocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah in Hebrew) will take place on Thursday, May 1 beginning at 6:45 p.m. at Congregation Beth Sholom at 1455 Elm Street in Napa (94558). The guest speaker will be Gloria Hollander-Lyon; born in Hungary, she will tell about her survival in seven Nazi concentration camps before being liberated by the Swedish Red Cross in May 1945. Her talk and the event are appropriate for families and children (12 years and older). This special event will have music, prayers and the names of Napa Valley families’ relatives who were victims of the Nazis. There will be light refreshments and there is no charge to attend nor are RSVPs necessary.

Holocaust Remembrance Day was established by the Israeli Parliament in 1951 to commemorate the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and in general, to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust by Jewish communities and individuals worldwide.

The full name of the memorial is Yom Hashoah Ve-Hagevurah (meaning Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and the Heroism). Since the early 1960s, the sound of a siren on Yom Hashoah stops traffic and pedestrians throughout the State of Israel for two minutes of silent remembrance. Jews in North America observe Yom Hashoah within synagogues as well as in the broader Jewish community. Commemorations range from synagogue services to community vigils and educational programs.
