Planning for the Big Game: Super Bowl Sunday

Pro_Pots-w.jpgI am the first to admit that I know very little about football, but I am totally fascinated by the culture of tailgating. The Super Bowl has become such an important foodie event (second only to Thanksgiving!), that these days it's hard to ignore when it rolls around once a year. Putting together a guide highlighting some of the best, most interesting gear & grub we can find—products for tailgating, entertaining, and expressing your team allegiances while you eat—has really gotten me into the spirit this year.

Pro_Pots2-w.jpgFans get so excited about their teams, about the game itself...I continue to be shocked by the sheer quantity of products available emblazoned with team logos, and the number of appliance, plates, and snack bowls that can be made to resemble helmets or footballs. In the course of searching for game-day gear I came across the above Pro Pots football slow cooker.

Though I was unable to get one from the manufacturer, I was able to find one online. Now it seems even Target and Amazon are out of stock—I take it this means a lot of people are already in serious planning mode for February 3rd? Luckily, if you are a little behind, it seems this theme-tastic appliance is still available from Walmart for only $5—the perfect price for an appliance you might only use once a year.

I may not know which teams will be playing, but I have already started to think about what I will be serving. I definitely want something that involves my new slow cooker, and I have been eyeing the White Bean and Shrimp Crostini from Todd English's game-day menu. Considering that over 14,500 tons of chips are consumed during the Super Bowl, I am going to need to come up with a great dip. Any suggestions? Are any of you already planning Super Bowl parties? What will you be serving?
