Darrell Corti to Address CAWG 2008 Annual Meeting

CAWGnewLOGO-w.jpgWine merchant, wine judge and more recently “wine activist” Darrell Corti will be the guest speaker at the 34th Annual Meeting of the California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG) on Tuesday, January 29, 2008, in Sacramento, California.

Corti is the co-owner of Sacramento's Corti Brothers Market. Corti has introduced fine food and wine to a seminal generation of American foodies, among them Gourmet magazine editor Ruth Reichl. In the 1970s, Corti imported wines from Italian regions that have only recently gained prominence on the world stage. He also was an early champion of Amador County Zinfandels and is one of the most respected judges of wines in California.

However, after arranging the tasting some high alcohol wines last March, Corti raised eyebrows when he instituted a new store policy to no longer sell wines with over 14.5-percent alcohol. “They make you very tired,” he said. “My idea of a really good bottle of wine is that two people finish the bottle and wish there was just a little bit more. Some of these wines with high levels of alcohol -- you can’t finish the bottle.”

Those attending the CAWG Annual Meeting will have the opportunity to hear from Corti about his thoughts on where California wines fit into the world marketplace. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. on January 29, 2007, at the Sheraton Grand Hotel, after the first day of seminars hosted by the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium. Corti’s presentation comes after brief business addresses by CAWG’s officers. The meeting, immediately followed by a reception, is free to all members and associates.

CAWG represents the growers of more than 60 percent of the gross grape tonnage crushed for wine and concentrate in California. The statewide association provides industry leadership to advocate public policies, research and education programs, and trade positions to enhance the business of growing California winegrapes.
