February 2008 Phenolics Symposium Scheduled
A Tribute to Bellwether Work of Vernon Singleton
Few researchers are as recognized, respected and influential in the world of phenolics as Dr. Vernon LeRoy Singleton. The American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV) will provide a unique retrospective of his work with recent research highlights at a special day-long phenolics symposium following the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium on Friday, February 1, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency in Sacramento, California. Registration will open October 22, 2007. Visit www.asev.org for details.
ASEV invited eight of the nation’s leading phenolic experts to discuss their contemporary phenolic work based on Dr. Singleton’s foundation. Topics covered for this one-day symposium will include the development of phenolic assays, construction of wine oxidation models, phenolic contributions to human perceptual response, occurrence of cinnamates in grapes and the formation of the grape reaction product. A reception and banquet will follow the symposium.
Dr. Singleton is a professor emeritus in the Department of Viticulture and Enology of the University of California, Davis. He joined the department in 1958, following positions in antibiotic research and fruit quality research at Purdue University, where he received a doctorate in agricultural biochemistry in 1951. He has authored or co-authored over 180 books, research papers and patents, including Principles and Practices of Winemaking and Phenolic Substances in Grapes and Wine: And Their Significance.
The American Society for Enology and Viticulture is a non-profit professional society dedicated to the interests of enologists, viticulturists and others in the fields of wine and grape research and production throughout the world. Membership includes professionals from wineries, vineyards, and academic institutions and organizations.
For updated information on the symposium, visit www.asev.org.
