France vs. The Rest of the World - HAPPENING TODAY!
This event makes a great gift for Christmas...
When: Saturday February 3rd - 2:00pm to 4:30pm
Where: Embassy of France, 4101 Reservoir Rd NW, Washington DC 2007
Price: $55 FWS members, $65 non-members
The Rules:
We will showcase 8 major grapes grown worldwide and in France.
The French Wine Society will select one French wine from each grape.
The Washington Wine Academy will have to challenge each of these wines with one wine coming from anywhere else in the World.
Both organizations will select wines available at Schneiders of Capitol Hill and must respect a retail price point of $25 for whites and $30 for reds.
Grapes shown will be: Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Each organization will select its own wines to showcase and will introduce each grape and advocate their wines.
The contenders:
France will be represented by Lisa Airey, CSW, CWE, Interim Executive Director of Society of Wine Educators.
The Rest of the World will be represented by Jay Youmans, Master of Wine.
Attendees will:
- Sit in either the French or Rest of World section (depending on where they bought their tickets - FWS or WWA).
- Blind taste the wines blind based on the grape varietal flights while being described by the two contenders.
- try to identify which is which
- vote for their favorite wine and most convincing contenders.
This fun and educational event will allow attendees to learn how to identify major grape varieties as well as decide on what style of wines they tend to prefer.
